Gene Watson Construction strives to provide a safe workplace
for it's employees and provide well trained individuals who believe
in a "TARGET ZERO" incident free operation. The following processes
give an idea of the basic philosophy, attitude and commitment implemented
to achieve our goals and be a leader in Safety performance.
BEHAVIOR BASED SAFETY (BBS): BBS is a tool utilized in
our proactive approach to reaching an incident free work environment.
The BBS process starts with management performing a required number
of field observations monthly. GWC supervisors are trained in the
BBS process and are also required to perform monthly field observations.
Field employees perform a separate field observation form which
is compiled from the BBS data submitted by management and the supervisors.
SAFETY in MOTION (SIM): This tool is utilized within GWC
as means for limiting the stress and forces our employees exert on
their bodies throughout the work day. Employees are trained in recognizing
correct body position, leverage, correct lifting and utilizing "best" techniques
while performing their assigned tasks. The result is less soft tissue
and repetitive motion injuries.
PROCESS PICTURE MAPPING (PPM): This
program is designed to assist employees in better understanding our
Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's). It is highly beneficial
for the new employee just starting out. The process adds
pictures to the written SOP so that the individual can actually see
the equipment, tools and job steps before they start their task.
GWC currently has eleven full time Safety professionals
on staff. Each work area has at minimum of one Safety professional
assigned to oversee and coordinate with our customers regarding all
safety issues relating to the company and our employees.
As with all industries, leading and lagging indicators
are needed to show progress and improvement. At GWC, our main lagging
indicator is our overall OSHA recordable incident rate (RIR). Since
the implementation of our BBS process, we have had a reduction in
our RIR. The following statistics show that "safety perfection" at
Gene Watson Construction is not just a goal but a commitment.
